A word of advice for French Quarter Fest 2011: get there early, get there hungry. The low, passing clouds and sporadic breeze form the river made for a perfect open to the four-day festival on Thursday–an extra day added to the Fest this year. If the first-day crowd was any indication, the French Quarter Festival will break another attendance record this year. Here’s a look at the best and new bites from Day #1.

Best bite from Day #1 at French Quarter Fest 2011: G.W. Fin's chef Tenney Flynn's Gulf fish (sheephead) taco with spicy tamarind sauce, chipotle mayo and slaw on a white tortilla.

Savory, punchy, pickly: the trifecta in Boucherie's 12-Hour Roast Beef Po-Boy with horseradish cream and pickled red onion.

New this year at French Quarter Fest: Broussard's Restaurant. Chef Gunter Preuss puts a German twist on the po-boy with the pork-and-onion stew po-boy with saurkraut and green onions.

As tasty as it is vibrant, Red Fish Grill's smoked crawfish po-boy is a cold crawfish salad tossed with avocado tomato relish and red cabbage slaw.
